I think a possible factor is TV coverage. Windsurfing is never on tv nowadays. I remember in the 90's Eurosport used to show some of the PWA and Sky sports had a dedicated section in 'Watersports world'. I think there was even a windsurfing tv program on ITV at one point. Nowadays theres nothing on tv - not even on the extreme sports channel, which I find weird.

Equipment cost is astronomical. I bought a nearly new motorbike last year at the same time as buying a new board and rig. Guess which cost more?!

Standup has become very popular and growing. Why?
Easy to have fun right from the start.
Fast learning curve.
Can find a spot on almost any body of water.
Lots of fun in marginal conditions, even for seasoned surfers.

Kiting has become very popular and growing. Why?
Frustrated windsurfers have taken it up in large numbers.
Faster learning, more action in less wind, many more places to get on the water.
Windsurfing demands special conditions to be good.
Lots of time spent on the beach waiting for wind and or waves,
and getting skunked on vacation trips.
Windsurfers get in a rut and stop learning.
Windsurfing demands better physical conditioning.
Kiting places fewer demands on the body.
Kiting works better in surf that is very difficult for windsurf wave sailing.
Smaller kiteboard has advantages for radical moves in surf.
Kiters turns so much more easily and quickly and catch many more waves.

Windsurfing gear takes up so much space and cannot easily be taken on airlines,
which charge quite a lot to transport it.
Getting good on a windsurfer is much harder, as well as learning the initial steps.
WS industry fixation with the pros, pretty much kills the entry level interest,
And WS prices have doubled in recent years.
except in certain locations with very good conditions for an extended season,
places such as Maui, or Hood River or Bonaire.

So I'll be honest here I haven't read all of the comments but I would like to put my view across.

I have been Windsurfing since I was 14 that's 17 years and have been involved in competitions, teaching it and coaching it. What I find is that Magazines are still flogging the same format, Boring! There's little or no media coverage, the cost of equipment that I once purchased brand new and sometimes a full quiver at a time is beyond my price range now. I have found that being an outsider to the sport was extremely hard to gain any kind of acceptance with in the many cliques that exist, unless you came from some kind of wealthy or sailing background.

Windsurfing has been infected with the slightly nerdy element that other sports such a Kitesurfing, Snowboarding, Skatebording, Surfing and so on Have managed to avoid. What I think we need is a counter culture within our sport of Hard Core, Couldn't give a F'#k!! Balls out Celebrities to grab the Kids of today's attention and say our sport is Cool!! These people should be celebrated. I look at the sport of Windsurfing these days and say Media coverage of our sport, Advertising of our sport hasn't change much over the last 17 years and I put that down to the fact everyone has grown up with the sport and forgot to cast of the drift wood and give it a fresh lift.

I used to love going Windsurfing and meeting new people watching them learn and laugh (sometimes) when it all went wrong, learning from each other and giving someone a big cheer when they finally pulled off a new move. Now there's no one.

In the 70's/80's the sport was new all you needed was a Board and a Sail, well that's all there was to it back then, you would wait until the summer and fill your days with sand castles, sunbathing and Sail Boarding and there lies a few reasons why now it's not as popular as it once was, it's not new any more, I'm sure that a households disposable income has shrunk considerably, do we all still go to the beach when it's sunny or is there a greater choice of things to do now, that Windsurfing has to compete with.

I will say this about our sport there are some really good youtube and vimeo videos out there check out www.winsurfmoves.com

I know this thread has been going for a few years now, it just saddens me that with all the other extreme sports I partake in windsurfing is the one that's suffering. I could go on for hours about my feelings on the sport. I'll still be out there doing something I love, I'll still be teaching my mates and although I no longer feel obliged to read the same boring crap that gets published every month, I will Windsurf for as long as my physical state allows.

I wonder If this will ever be read?

There are a lot of good ideas for how to separate a stuck windsurf mast but over the years I have found the absolute best way is with sheer man power:

1 guy twisting each halve of the mast = no joy
3 guys either side = easy mast separation!!

Seriously a mast that can seem totally stuck together can be apart in a matter of seconds if you just have enough people twisting each section.

No more cold hand problems while windsurfing!

Just thought I'd let everyone know about the new 'Ianovated' wetsuit I've been using for the last month. Iniatially I was a bit sceptical that the suit would make any significant difference (as my current suit is the superb O'neill psycho2 5:3) but it does. I'm now windsurfing in unbeliveably low temperatures and not simply surviving but having fun; comfortable enough to be happy trying freestyle.
I used to sail in no lower than 8C/46F and even in that I would have to stop every 5-10 min (depending on windchill) in order to shake my hands warm.
About 2 weeks ago I sailed for two hours (inland UK lake) ....2C/35F water temp., AIR was 3.5C dropping to 2C/35F ( last hr was sleet! ) with gusts up to 38knots averaging 27 knots and I had a great session.....only one out for some reason :) . Only time I stopped sailing was due to tiredness not cold.
Can't recommend this new suit and hand heating tube system enough.....if you need a new winter wetsuit buying this really is a no brainer. If your missing out on good local conditions because its too cold you should seriously consider one.
Bad points?
People asking every 5 min...whats that sticking out of your suit mate! Definately use the black tubes supplied.
Very slight extra stiffness around shoulders (dry zip and tubes)....only really noticable when you first put on...and still plenty flexible for any maneuver.
Takes extra energy to blow through the tubes...but even in above conditions I only needed to blow down tubes 3/4 times per 3/4 mile reach after a good dunking, 1/2 times if you stay dry after transistion to maintain warm hands, so again not a major issue.
You end up sailing in such cold conditions that rigging up/getting changed and first few reaches can be pretty miserable until your body heat kicks in.
You can forget your sailing in such extreme conditions...so be extra careful if sailing without rescue cover!
All in all though well worth the few very minor issues to defeat cold hands and get an enjoyable day on the water.

We are going to be based out of the brand new Tenerife Windsurfing Solution (TWS) centre in the South Bay of El Medano. From here I will put together an individual training course tailored to your specific needs and experience. We will set an overall goal for what you want to achieve during the week and start working towards it step by step.

We can work on pretty much any given level from top to bottom. Whether you want to push yourself past the fear of rotating through your first forward loop or you just need that last bit of advice to get the landing right in your pushloops. Maybe your bottomturn needs a bit of work or you want to start training the rotation and timing of doing a wave 360, there is always some aspect of your sailing that can be improved and that is what we are going to work full power with all week.

We are also lucky to have established a collaboration with GoPro from which we get some of the best watersports cameras avalible to use during the clinic. We are going to set you up with a camera for some of your sessions and then we are going to look through the video footage so that we can get a closeup look at what you can do to improve your sailing, which is one of the most effective ways of correcting your mistakes.

Furthermore one of the main themes of this clinic is to teach you how to set yourself a long term goal and start achieving it step by step. That is why I will be giving a lecture for two evenings where I will be talking about different ways of supporting your goals and keep working in the right direction, whether it’s through sponsorship, funds or exploiting the oppertunities that your country has to offer for sports people.

You will also be given your own folder which contains a lot of golden information on the theories and mechanisms behind modern day sponsorships which will give you a solid footplant in your own search for sponsorships in the future.

Re: Hydrofoils use, construction and dimensions.

I've been making them for my own surfboards and windsurfers for a few years, I started copying the ones that the water skiers use and I incorporated the two foils into one shape. An integrated single foil has better pitch control so you're not constantly keeping an eye on the nose and I've built surface piercing foils so they lift as the speed increases, I found a larger foil lifts easily but as the speed increases it gets a bit sensitive so the foil rises as the speed increases and reduces the planing area.
The surfboard foils are different because they water flow comes from across the foil so they're a different design altogether with two levels and shorter struts, not a perfect design yet but it's getting close, the foils lift as you drop into the wave and they're fine for bottom turns and cutties but not too stable in the tube. It's a totally different set of angles and flow in the tube !
I've made about 70 foils over the past 9 years, mainly out of fibreglass and epoxy resin but also out of ply and carbon fibre and some in Aluminium.
Theyre just a variation on what other people are using and I was hoping there might be someone else making their own too.
