Hi,

Just wondering if you ever try the quads as twinns to see
if the board would perform better or not.
I have had a twinn fin and now have 2 quads, but prefer
the twinn fin from what i have tried and had feedback from other
wave sailors in my area they agree.
I will try my boards as twinns when i get around to ordering the
blanks for the thrusters.
Can you tell me from a technical side what changes in performance
should be made or lost by removing the thrusters.

Thanks..

Any reason the Simmer Freewave 85 or 95 tri fin didn't make the test?
Did you have one on site and it didn't make the cut, or was one not available?

Have you or any of the clones tried the board?

Thanks in advance for any feedback on it.

I sail 50/50 on the coast and a local reservoir, so have the same issues as you with windless pockets and changeable weather. I would look at the 122 futura, I get on great with mine.

You still have the options for in board straps and a more swept back fin to help in the early stages, with then moving more towards the back and out board, then you can change the fin to a much faster speed/ slalom shape.

The 2012 Futura is at the top of my list to purchase in the freeride – freerace board types if I can find one. I have three summers experience of sailing a 187 L beginner and a 102 L wave boards. The wave board is not suited for my location on lakes with a good wind day hitting 18 knots. If I were to rank my desires in a board: 1) speed in flat 2) easy of gybing 3) top end control 4) beginner carving. Being that I am still mostly a novice I feel I should mostly go with a more forgiving freeride, but I am afraid I will quickly out grow the board and want to go toward the racing end of board production. I’ve looked at the reviews about the Fanatic Ray and was not impressed about it’s gybing abilities compared to other manufactures. Number 2 on my wish list is Tabou Rocket and 3 is JP Xcite or Supersport. BTW I am a short and stocky 5 5 and 75 kgs. and feel like I may still need a board to float me through sub-planning gybe as I learn. The real decision I am having a hard time with is weather I should go with a freeride or freerace board.

I Didn’t know about OTC Tenerife or UK. I need to find something like that here in the USA.

Hello

I have tried a 136 pro super sport at OTC Tenerife I also tried a 122 and 133 Futura in the same time and conditions, heavy chop/ swell with a bit of racing. They where all 2010 editions what year is you Futrua?? I have found they have changed a lot over the last few years, they have got more freerace since the Carve came back out, and are much improved. I think that there is a big difference between my 2011 and the 2010 and 2008 versions that I have tried over the last few years.

I have since brought a 122 Carbon 2011 Futura. I much perfired the feel and speed of the Futura, I found if you move the mast back a bit it did help in the chop. I know that the 136 is that bit bigger but found it to be very cumbersome and I felt that I was always about to go over the front, it didn't feel that fast either.

I do find with the Futura that the fin that comes is a bit soft for me and will give under you at times, but I have sorted this with a better fin. Also you do need to be positive with it to get the best out of it, the harder you push the more you get. Jibes tend not to be to much of an issues, just be positive.

I'm 5 11 and 98kg's I tend to use my 7 and 8.2m sails on it I have used my 6.2m but I need to get a smaller fin for it.

Have you thought about a Fanatic Ray 130??
I was worried about the extra width but it rocks with the thin rails. I can't imagine a better all around large freestyle wave it feels like my 90 freestyle wave .

Steve,
I don’t have any information about you’re the Supersport 127, but I was wondering how you felt about your jibes on your Futura. I’ve never done a fast planning jibe, and if I get a Futura, am I going to be at my wits end trying to pull off my first planning jibe?

BTW: One of the board comparison reviews I read about the Futura said it was a passive board rather than an active board and did fairly well in the chop compared to the other freerace boards.
Both boards are freeriding boards but with quite different caracteristics. The Tabou is a real planing machine and very easy to gybe, the rocket leaning more to freerace, like the Starboard Futura. The Carve is more a pure freerider and will out perform the Tabou and the Futura when it comes to gybing. The Carve is a really fast board but If you into blasting I would go for the Rocket or the Futura, are you into free(fun)riding and Carving I would go for the Carve.

I have been strongly considering the same board. I started sail two years ago with two used boards, a 187 ltr. beginner and a 102 ltr. wave both from the mid 1980’s. I think my skill level is an intermediate…I get in the straps, water start, handling strong wind, and occasional jibe with the 187, but I struggle with the 102 board. It is very loose and needs a lot of wind which I don’t always get on lakes in north Texas. My hesitation on getting the Carve is that I am also interested in its faster sibling, the Future. From what you have ridden what recommendation would you make for someone still trying to nail his jibes?

I wish board companies had an upgrade plan for people who need a forgiving board to hone their skills until they are ready for faster less forgiving board.

Bought my 1st of 2 new boards this year 2011 121 Starboard Carve Technora
Got to sail it with a 7.4 yesterday in some flat to small 2 ft chop for 1 hour.
I am no expert and have only rode a few boards in my years of sailing buy here is what I thought that first hour.
I am 56 yrs old weigh 235lbs with wetsuit on, the 121 ltr floated me well right off the top and seem to get up and plane ok , compared to my last board I was replacing my HI Fly Madd 115 twin fin which by the way I really like so it will take a lot to get me thrilled with the Carve.
So rode it for 1 hour turned very nice and seemed to do just about anything you wanted in the turns from a slower turn to a more sharp on a dime turn which was nice.
It also seemed to handle what chop there was pretty good, go upwind not a problem down wind too, here in the "Gorge" USA you seem to sail down wind a lot cause the river is pushing you upwind.
Speed was average not a big concern of mine I just like to have fun, and when I learn more about the board I am sure it will go faster than yesterday.
My only draw back that I could tell was that it did not feel as "active or squirrely"
as I wanted, the foot straps were place inboard for the rep. told me that would be the spot to get the most response from the board.
of course I had a 7.4 sail on which is kind of heavy and cumbersome.
So all in all a good board, I read all the tests the past couple of weeks and I felt it tested the best and the Carves had a good reputation in the past and that is why I went with it. Cost was 1400 US dollars.
My next board will be a RRD 2012 102ltr FSW which should be much more active.

Hiya,

I'm looking at getting a 90-100ltr wave board for lighter wind days.

I want something thats going to be good for frontside riding without sacrificing jumping performance (although I want to ride more tbh).

Have heard good things about the Quatro Tempo 92 & Tabou DaCurve 91TE but not sure... What about Fanatic?

I sail down in between Henistbury head - Avon - Bournemouth - Poole - read cross shore / cross on waves/ wind - so want a board to suit those conditions. Although something that can handle decent waves too if I go to Cornwall for a w/e would be cool.

I'm 90kgs, usually sail an 80ltr evo - so want something to add to this for lighter wind days - ie float out and ride / wind drops I can change board rather than sail...

Anyone out there own either of the above or a fantatic and can recommend?

Cheers

Both boards are freeriding boards but with quite different caracteristics. The Tabou is a real planing machine and very easy to gybe, the rocket leaning more to freerace, like the Starboard Futura. The Carve is more a pure freerider and will out perform the Tabou and the Futura when it comes to gybing. The Carve is a really fast board but If you into blasting I would go for the Rocket or the Futura, are you into free(fun)riding and Carving I would go for the Carve.

I got this email from a Rep.
Thanks for your enquiry. The new FSWs are amazing, their shortness and curved plan shape make them looser, more fun and better in the air than our previous FSWs and this width also makes them very stable and gives them a wider wind range. The width allows us to to make the rails thinner so they can be more responsive in carving moves and even in wave riding too.

I use the the 102, 96 and 90 in waves for lighter winds or gustier conditions and only switch to my quads when the waves are bigger or the riding is getting tougher.

The boards are very stable through the water and soooo smooth, many of my clients describe them as smooth as silk and very controllable. Many who try our fsws buy : )

The feedback from all sailors of a variety of weights and abilities has been excellent.

What weight are you and which size interests you so I can best advise?
How would this board fit in your quiver?

Look forward to your reply and thanks for considering RRD,
Enjoy,

Looking to buy a new board this year has anyone tried a 2012 RRD Freewave
and would like to report on it?
The 102ltr since I am a heavy weight.
New shape this year wider and shorter.
My choices I think are the Goya 1 104ltr and the RRD
Not too much has been said about them except the adds.
I sail the Gorge at the more tame spots like to get an opinion of someone in the know.
THANKS

couldn't agree more - I have had the 92 and still got the 76 as well but the 84 is just soooo special. Enough float to get you out, gets on the plane easily, easy to sail and insane on the wave :-). some boards may turn as tight but like the RDD's its a soft less engaged turn, the mistral is a full get the rail in and crank it. Makes other boards feel stiff by comparision. Stev-o how you getting on with your smaller custom. I've had a couple of nicks ex-twinzer customs and they just arn't as sweet for the UK due to the extra rocker.

I changed the fins to K4 17cm and 16cm and the board got even looser but with more grip at the same time - wicked combo! Still stoked on this board - it's a cult classic :-)
