Bought my 1st of 2 new boards this year 2011 121 Starboard Carve Technora
Got to sail it with a 7.4 yesterday in some flat to small 2 ft chop for 1 hour.
I am no expert and have only rode a few boards in my years of sailing buy here is what I thought that first hour.
I am 56 yrs old weigh 235lbs with wetsuit on, the 121 ltr floated me well right off the top and seem to get up and plane ok , compared to my last board I was replacing my HI Fly Madd 115 twin fin which by the way I really like so it will take a lot to get me thrilled with the Carve.
So rode it for 1 hour turned very nice and seemed to do just about anything you wanted in the turns from a slower turn to a more sharp on a dime turn which was nice.
It also seemed to handle what chop there was pretty good, go upwind not a problem down wind too, here in the "Gorge" USA you seem to sail down wind a lot cause the river is pushing you upwind.
Speed was average not a big concern of mine I just like to have fun, and when I learn more about the board I am sure it will go faster than yesterday.
My only draw back that I could tell was that it did not feel as "active or squirrely"
as I wanted, the foot straps were place inboard for the rep. told me that would be the spot to get the most response from the board.
of course I had a 7.4 sail on which is kind of heavy and cumbersome.
So all in all a good board, I read all the tests the past couple of weeks and I felt it tested the best and the Carves had a good reputation in the past and that is why I went with it. Cost was 1400 US dollars.
My next board will be a RRD 2012 102ltr FSW which should be much more active.

90-100ltr wave boards - twin or quad? (no replies)

Hiya,

I'm looking at getting a 90-100ltr wave board for lighter wind days.

I want something thats going to be good for frontside riding without sacrificing jumping performance (although I want to ride more tbh).

Have heard good things about the Quatro Tempo 92 & Tabou DaCurve 91TE but not sure... What about Fanatic?

I sail down in between Henistbury head - Avon - Bournemouth - Poole - read cross shore / cross on waves/ wind - so want a board to suit those conditions. Although something that can handle decent waves too if I go to Cornwall for a w/e would be cool.

I'm 90kgs, usually sail an 80ltr evo - so want something to add to this for lighter wind days - ie float out and ride / wind drops I can change board rather than sail...

Anyone out there own either of the above or a fantatic and can recommend?

Cheers
and would like to report on it?
The 102ltr since I am a heavy weight.
New shape this year wider and shorter.
My choices I think are the Goya 1 104ltr and the RRD
Not too much has been said about them except the adds.
I sail the Gorge at the more tame spots like to get an opinion of someone in the know.

Im looking at getting a new board and I'm keen to venture into the world of wave sailing. I'm about 85-90kg

At the moment i used a 97L 2009 skate. Which satisfies my need for freestyle.

having come up north for uni my local spots are all waves, this means my skate isn't the best.

I've found a couple of really nice wave boards, great condition and around my price range. However, I'm not sure whether i would be able to sail them.

I'm an ok sailor just advancing through the beginnings of freestyle moves and a couple of loops. but would an 85L wave board be too small for me or is this ok?

thoughts, advise and opinions would be awesome
Looking to move down from a 150 vol 75 cm board to either of the above. Am planing ,in the straps and harness and
gybing in light winds. Both boards seem to get good reviews. At 82 kgs should I go even smaller, only drawback being I
have not quite nailed deep water starts yet.
The question is; personal preference or does one board offer advantages over the other for progressing.

Hey,

I just got rid of my 430 SC6 that I did not find suite my Simmer Iron 5.7 (2010). The thing is that I now am hesitant to go for a good 430 rdm or just use my 400 rdm-10, with a long extension, to my 5.7 (luff 439) which is my biggest sail. My thoughts are if it would be better to use the good rdm-10 400 instead of a rdm 430 with a moderate level of carbon, ca 60 %. I do not want to pay that much for a 430 since it will be my light wind/sunny day equipment.
I know that I should try but right now the ice make it a bit hard. ;)

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

RRD Firestorm or Firemove?

I am researching which of these boards would be best for me and would appreciate any advice anyone has on the decision:

I am 174lbs(79kilo), 5'11"
Intermediate ability (in harness, in straps, planing, working on jibes, working on water starting)
I own an Ezzy Freeride 6.0 and an Ezzy Freeride 7.5 (and an RRD Longrider 180L, 340cm x 70cm)

I live and sail in Minnesota, 12knot-20knot winds, usually flatter water

Style: Freeride

which board is better for:

early planing?

jibing?

flat water?

rough water?

controlled vs squirly?

lastly, which size would be best? (Firemove: 100, 110, 120, Firestorm: 111, 120, 138)

thanks a ton!

Have you guys ever tested or know much about the starboad 2011 quad, if so can you advise on best fins to put in it.

At the moment I have just bought the board after trying it in crossoff logo waves, it ripped! love it, hence bought it and selling my twin fin, but id like to work out best fin set ups and might buy some light wind or maybe high wind options.

At the mo I have large fins in the front and small ones in the back, this seems the only option as the front ones are a different box, would it be worth getting smaller fins for high wind 4.2 weather? or bigger back and smaller fronts?

Anyway just incase anyone has any views, its all of interest to me. has anyone tryed it with just the small rear fins? How big are fins available that fit the MCS style surf board box??

I keep noticing that most quads have biggest fins in back, then smaller in front, how come this is not the case with my quad? Works great as is, especially on the top turn, just interested to learn more...
thanx,

I've been to Medano this year when you testet the 90 litre waveboards. I was sailing the Fanatic, Starboard and Tabou afterwards - and I had exactly the same impressions before I read your test :-)
I have a look for the Goya 92 but couldn't sail it because it was rented at that time. So my question, is the Goya really better in planing than for example the Starboard? Also the shape (59.5), weight, etc. doesn't really look like this? Is the gap between Tabou and Goya in planing (get up) very big or are they close together?
I have 88kg and I'm in Medano for about 2 months a year, so I'm looking for a good planing board that I can also sail with 4.7 in higher waves - Cabezo ;-)

Adrian,
Great job with the 90L multifin board test. I really like the fact you are getting ahead of all the other board tests by addressing in more detail, the lightweight / heavyweight suitability. One more thing which would be great to add is tail width too.

At 68kgs, years ago I purchased a 2006 JP FSW pro 93 for my large board (5.0-6.7) for some waves, but mostly just bump and jump or blasting back and forth. I purchased it based on the reviews. However, I felt the board was so geared toward heavyweights as it had so much volume in the tail and took so much back foot pressure for me to really turn the board sharply. I wish I could have seen some tail width dimensions relative to other boards before I purchased it.

I see for 2012, the JP FSW 92 pro comes with thrusters, but is the same shape as the the non pro edition that comes single fin. I was wondering if anyone knows if the pro version can be used just as easily in a single fin setup for bump and jump (with the thrusters removed), and then multi fin setup for waves? Is this board and size going to be in your tests? If anyone has any insight into wether this board is suitable for lightweights, it would be helpful.

I'll post this in the general forum too.

Thanks.

Is North Sails Curve a good sail choice for me? (no replies)

Hello!

My used 6,5 sail got a big hole in it after my last ride....

I must therefore get me a new one.

Do you think that a North Sails Curve 6,4 is a good choice for me?

I started windsurf for about three years ago at the age of 40, my weight is 95 kg and I have got a RRD Evolution 360 155 litres (until I get better - then I might buy me a more advanced board).

Or is it better to get a North Sails Natural 6,6 instead?

What is positive and negative about thos two sails?

Hope to get some response before I decide what to do. Hopefully there is someone who has experience of those two sails and can give me some good advice.

Thanks in advance.

Goya Quad Pro 78 vs. Quatro KT 76 (4 replies)

Hi, last autumn I bought the Goya quad 78l (I weigh 84kg) as my down the line board for sails from 4,7 and down. I find the board a bit loose in the top-turn unless I turn in the vertical part of the wave. At full speed on a less steep wave the board easily slides or loose the grip. Question: Is the Quatro KT 76 less slashier than the Goya? Or is it just a matter of digging down the rails?

Thanks,

Hey,
Was wondering have you ever tested a Supersport 127 or intend to? I currently have a Futura 122 and enjoy it in most conditions but I do find it fairly unstable in heavy chop. I borrowed a 127 and even though it has more volume it handled the chop much better. Im 6ft 3 and 94kg so enjoyed having the extra volume of the supersport too. Just wondering your what your thoughts were on it with regard to speed, control, fin sizes etc.... The supersport I borrowed was a pro edition btw.
Thanks,

Hi There,

Will you guys be testing BIG wave boards in the 90's litres? Seems that with the new quad configuration these are a must for the quiver and also maybe as one board quiver. I weight 78kg, but don't sail much so these are easy boards to jump on and feel as if I you were sailing often. Also range is huge so can take down to 4.5m sails. By the way I am looking at getting the RRD wave cult 92 quad or the Tabou Da Curve Quad 91. Any comparisons among these would also be much appreciated.

Thank you, and good wind to you.
