Throughout this week we'll be posting text message updates from Ireland. Here comes number 1:
Re: News from BWA Ireland

Wind forecast to build today. Maybe just enough swell for competition at the moment and due to build through tonight. Wind about 10 knots SW at the moment and all sailors meeting at Gowlane at 3pm for the next briefing.

Waves waist-high. A few people wobbling out on 5.8s, and a few pros going paddleboarding. Wind still forecast to increase.

First few rounds of Amateurs completed but wind has completely dropped. Swell getting bigger... On hold.

Tuesday morning: Waves tiny - knee-high, occasionally waist. 4.5-5.0 cross-off (very off) wind. Amateur final about to go... Scott Mcdowal vs Niall (local guy)
Re: News from BWA Ireland

Amateur final finished. Very difficult to find waves. Looks like Scott may have got that as Niall struggled to find a good wave... Ladies up next. And pros in 2 heats' time. Though conditions look dubious for the pros.

Confirmed Scott Macdowell wins amateur final, Niall Mellon second, Adam Sims third, Joe Callahan fourth. Lady's final Louise Emery vs Katie Mackenna just finished. Very close. Masters final on now.

Ladies' result: Katie McKenna 1st. Masters result: Craig Hamilton 1st, Davy Edmiston 2nd, Mark Lloyd 3rd. Pros start in 4 minutes - 20 minute heats...

Mullen and Murray advance against Ten Hoeve and Lewis. Mullen on 5.3. Waves very inconsistent.

Proffitt and Woods go through against Archer and Gardner. Proffitt on 5.8 and 85, and comments there was a fair bit of luck involved in wave selection.

Next heat abandoned due to lack of wind and waves. Hope that waves will build again as tide turns. On hold...

Still on hold. Wind picking up but waves still small... Everybody having lunch after early start this morning and potential late finish. Drizzle with occasional sun.

Waves tiny but wind OK. On hold, still waiting for waves to build...
Re: News from BWA Ireland

Action about to start again. Wind pretty strong - 4.5 to 5m weather - but waves still pretty tiny. Starting with amateurs again shortly, then pros when the waves build as the tide comes in.

Amateurs are running slowly through double elimination, but waves aren't getting any bigger. Not enough for the pros yet... Wind is strong enough though, 4.7s about right. Niall and Adam Sims currently on the water to see who sails against Scott Macdowell
Re: News from BWA Ireland

Adam Sims through to sail against Scott. On the water and pretty close so far. Looks like Davy Edmiston fought his way through the masters double to reach the final. To be sailed next. Still not enough waves for the pros...
Re: News from BWA Ireland
18 May '10 | 5:34pm
Looks like Macdowell lost to Simms so they have to sail again to decide a winner...
Re: News from BWA Ireland
18 May '10 | 6:54pm
Amateur result: Adam Simms 1st, Scott Macdowell 2nd. Very close heat and great fight-back from Simms. Masters result: Craig Hamilton 1st, Davy Edmiston 2nd

The pros completed round one in very small waves and fading light. Unofficial result (to be confirmed) puts Proffitt 1st. Timo, Skye and Horrocks were the other three sailors in the final. Chance of more competition tomorrow afternoon.

19 May '10 | 2:23pm
OK, we're on again. Pretty windy 4.5 weather, shoulder-high waves in the sets but pretty flat in between. Straight into pro double elimination. 2 jumps 2 rides with 10 minute heats...
